Three supporters of the Trinamul-affiliated students’ union at Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) were arrested at Sinthi on Thursday for allegedly assaulting and molesting a student of the university last month.
The arrests were made after Calcutta High Court rejected their bail plea six days ago.
Police said Biswajit Dey, Samiran Soren and Tanmoy Aditya were picked up from near the Sinthi crossing on BT Road around 12.30pm. Three other students had been arrested in the same case earlier.
An MA second-year student had lodged a complaint with Sinthi police station that she was molested while waiting for transport outside the university’s BT Road campus. “I was dragged into a room on the campus, assaulted and molested. They also snatched money from my wallet and the ornaments I was wearing,” the girl had said in her complaint.
The police had arrested three students, but the girl alleged that the main accused were roaming scot-free as they were supporters of the Trinamul -led students’ union at the university.
“Biswajit was the observer of the students’ union in the university. The other two, Samiran and Tanmoy, were active Trinamul supporters,” said an officer of the police station.
The girl wrote to the state human rights commission, which then asked the police to take action.
Higher education minister Bratya Basu had also sought a report from the university on the girl’s complaint.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Sabyasachi Basu Roychowdhury, was not available for comment.
A former general secretary of the Trinamul-run students' union at Jaipuria College and his friend were arrested for molesting a third-year student on Tuesday. When a friend of the girl protested, the duo allegedly assaulted him. The girl lodged a complaint with Shyampukur police station but withdrew her statement in court the next day, leading to bail for the accused.
