Guwahati, Aug. 28: Sunrise Athletic Club consolidated their position in the current standings of the Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super Division Football League, defeating Food Corporation of India Sports Club (SC) by a solitary goal at Nehru Stadium here today. Sunrise are safely placed in the championship group in the second leg.
In the rematch after a heavy downpour interrupted the proceedings yesterday, FCI displayed flair. The entire first half saw FCI players making desperate attempts to find the target.
Sunrise came close to breaking the deadlock in the first minute itself. However, Nigerian recruit striker Camara’s header on having received a cross from Olando missed the target by some margin.
Soon after FCI failed to capitalise on their second minute opportunity as Birdwm Basumatary’s strike from inside the box landed in the safe hands of Sunrise custodian Santi Ranjan Das.
Clearance Carter, having received a pass from the midfield, attempted the target from the edge of the box in the 38th minute. The strike, however, failed to trouble FCI custodian Gobinda Boro as the shot went wide off the mark.
Rakesh Das provided Birdwm Basumatary with an absolute scoring opportunity, but the latter’s strike from the edge of the box failed to find the net in the 41st minute.
Sunrise got their all-important lead in the 60th minute through a Camara header. Rojit Singh, who took the flagkick, ensured the right placement for Camara to find the back of the net through a calculated header.
FCI, desperately in search of the equaliser, missed out on a number of occasions towards the dying moments of the game. Lalramnghak provided a fine thorough pass to substitute Bishwajit Swargiary but failed to derive the desired result as his shot went way wide of target in the additional minutes of the full time.
A Division League: In the Jibeswar Goswami Guwahati first Division League, Gauhati Town Club were awarded walkover as opponents Abutani FC failed to field in their team on the second turf of the same venue.
After conceding the walkover today, Abutani have been relegated to second division league, finishing without a single point in the tally. GTC, on the other hand, have scaled up the tally to be placed on top with 16 points and will be in contention for the title if Ganga SC and City Police share points in their last match on Friday.
A 10th-minute goal by L. Figo helped New Model Sports Club, Udalguri post a solitary-goal win against North East Sports Foundation, Tezpur to march into the second round of the 56th Dugar Shield Football Tournament that resumed after a gap of 10 years at the Polo Field here today.
