Silchar, Aug. 28: The carcass found in a Kali temple at Rongpur near here on Sunday night was not cow meat, a forensic report has proved .
Inspector-general of police (law and order) S.N. Singh today said the carcass was either that of a goat or a sheep. The carcass had been sent to the state forensic science laboratory, Guwahati, on Monday.
Singh said nine persons have been arrested so far under IPC sections 147, 149, 323, 341, 353 and 356 for Sunday night’s violence in Rongpur in which 14 persons were injured. The police continued to raid the possible hideouts of the mastermind they had identified on Monday but did not find him, DIG (south Assam) Vinod Kumar said.
Top police officers were tight-lipped about the political and religious identity of the mastermind. Lower rung police officers here said they were looking for a VHP leader.
Cachar deputy commissioner G.M. Hazarika, in a release, alleged that Sunday’s coverage of the temple fracas by some Guwahati-based news channels was “exaggerated” and appealed for refrain on sensitive incidents in future.
