Guwahati, Aug. 27: It was everything but football at Nehru Stadium here today.
A free for all situation following a scuffle between two players led to the abandonment of the Jibeswar Goswami Guwahati first division football league match between Rajbari AC and Sports Authority of India (SAI) Sports Club on the second turf this afternoon.
According to the match officials, things took an ugly turn in the 50th minute when two players got involved in fisticuffs which soon led to both the teams resorting to violence.
Rajbari AC custodian Th. Amunchou suffered an injury on his left wrist while Devi Prasad Rabha of SAI sustained a collar bone injury.
The situation took a toll in the absence of security personnel who arrived late. The match was officially abandoned in the 77th minute after SAI refused to take the field.
“The referee report has come to us and we will take a decision on it tomorrow. It was an unpleasant situation after which SAI refused to play. A SAI player injured his collar bone and sustained some injuries on his face while the Rajbari custodian suffered wrist injury,” confirmed hosts Guwahati Sports Association secretary Ibocha Singh.
The scuffle, that lasted for more than five minutes, witnessed the use of almost everything available on the field including the corner flagsticks. Devi Prasad Rabha had to flee to the first turf where he was given first aid by the Sunrise AC players.
“The match was proceeding on the second turf and at the time of the incident there was a heavy downpour leading to the delay in our intervention,” said Singh.
Rajbari were leading 3-2 when play was abandoned. Naresh Sharma scored a brace with goals in the third and 48th minutes while skipper Shaolin Singh scored in the 16th minute for Rajbari.
Jagjibon Boro and Samujal Rabha were the scorers for SAI in the 15th and 45th minutes respectively.
Super Division League: Rain played spoilsport forcing the rescheduling of the Abhishek Motors RG Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super League match between Food Corporation of India (FCI) Sports Club and Sunrise Athletic Club for tomorrow at Nehru Stadium here today.
After a goalless first half, the match had to be abandoned owing to unplayable conditions.
