Islampur, Aug. 26: One person was arrested from Dakunia today for allegedly chaining a mason for almost 48 hours, accusing him of murdering his brother’s wife in Delhi seven months back.
Police said Suresh Das would be produced in court tomorrow.
“We have arrested Suresh Das, 35, in connection with the chaining incident and he is going to be produced in court tomorrow,” the officer-in-charge of Chakulia police station, Gautam Roy, said.
He has been booked under Section 342 (unlawful confinement). If proved guilty, Das can face a jail term of up to a year or a fine up to Rs 1,000 or both.
Rambilas Sahney, a resident of Kishanganj near Chakulia, 40km from here, had been chained to the verandah of his sister-in-law Hema Devi’s parents’ home in Dakunia from Friday evening.
He was rescued by a police team around 4.30pm yesterday.
Rambilas had gone to Dakunia to fetch his brother’s son and daughter on Friday when local people caught him and chained him accusing him of being behind Hema’s murder.
The next day, a salisi meeting was held in Dakunia and Hema’s family members demanded Rs 1.5 lakh from Rambilas as maintenance cost for his niece and nephew.
Hema’s family members said they had no information about her husband, Ramchandra, the other accused.
Today, Chakulia police said the deceased’s family members had lodged a complaint with Sarabha Nagar police station in Ludhiana, naming the 45-year-old Rambilas as the prime accused in Hema’s murder.
Roy said a team of officers from Sarabha Nagar was on its way. “We have spoken to Ludhiana police and they have said Rambilas was accused in a murder case, the victim being his brother’s wife, Hema Devi. A team is on its way here from Ludhiana,” Roy said.
Today, Rambilas was produced in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate here and charged under Section 41 (person concerned in any cognisable offence or against whom a reasonable complaint has been made) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. He has been remanded in police custody till September 7.
The police have submitted a report on their findings in connection with the murder complaint lodged in Ludhiana.
