Calcutta, Aug. 26: Mamata Banerjee today created a zilla parishad post to accommodate a section of winners allegedly unhappy at not being made sabhadipatis or saha-sabhadipatis.
“I am creating the post of dal-neta or dal-netri. They will coordinate with the sabhadhipatis in running the zilla parishads,” the chief minister was quoted as telling the elected zilla parishad members, party MLAs, MPs and ministers from 12 districts at a meeting in Town Hall.
Mamata today read out the names of those who will hold the top two rural posts in eight of the 13 zilla parishads that Trinamul has won. The sabhadipatis and saha-sabhadiptis of the remaining five will be announced tomorrow.
“As Mamatadi herself announced the names, there was little any of the leaders could do. Ever since the panchayat election results, there has been hectic lobbying at Trinamul Bhavan for the top two posts in the zilla parishads,” a Trinamul leader said.
The post of a sabhadhipati is equivalent to that of a minister of state and he is entitled to an honorarium and an official car, among other benefits. The perks a dal-neta or dal-netri will enjoy are not clear.
The chief minister instructed the newly appointed sabhadhipatis to work in consultation with the dal-netas or netris. She has also decided to set up a monitoring committee headed by the district presidents to settle any dispute between the zilla parishad chief and the dal-netas or netris.
