Dhubri, Aug. 25: One person died and two were injured last night when the car in which they were travelling plunged into a waterbody beside NH31 at Dhirghat under Chapor police station in Dhubri district.
Two of the passengers in the car were rescued. The body of the third person was fished out from the pond in the wee hours today.
Rakhit Basumatari, 38, a resident of Moriagaon in Kokrajhar district, died while Chandan Nath, 32, and Bulbul Nath of Suryakhata in Bilasipara town were rescued, a police source said.
After preliminary treatment, the injured persons were shifted to a private nursing home in Bongaigaon.
The trio were on their way to Bilasipara in Dhubri district from Bongaigaon, when the accident took place. The source said the driver appeared to have lost control and the car fell into the pond.
“Initial investigation suggests that the three persons were under the influence of alcohol. We are yet to ascertain who was driving the car,” traffic sub-inspector of Chapor police station, Jadav Bharali, said.
Basumatari’s body was handed over to his family after post mortem today.
