Police busted a five-member gang of truck-wheel lifters at Chandil on NH-33 in Seraikela-Kharsawan district in the small hours of Sunday. An SUV, a stolen truck wheel and equipment for dismantling wheels have been recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.
Those arrested hail from the steel city and are in the 20-25 years age group. While Pusha Karmakar and Santosh Rai hail from Burmamines, Sandeep Singh, Mohammed Raza and Sakha Singh, are residents of Golmuri.
Revealing about the breakthrough, officer-in-charge of Chandil police station Arvind Kumar said that the youths were nabbed red-handed from near a Hazaribagh-bound truck, parked a little distance away from a dhaba on NH-33.
“At about 1 am, when a patrolling party was in the area, police found five people using a jack to remove the rear wheel of a truck,” he said, adding that the miscreants claimed to be replacing a defective wheel.
Kumar further said on enquring at a nearby dhaba, police found the driver and cleaner of the truck. “Once they confirmed there was nothing wrong with the truck, these five were nabbed,” he added.
Police sources said that the gang was active in the area over the past two months and it would be investigated whether any dhaba owner or staff were hand-in-globe with them.
