Calcutta, Aug. 24: A nine-year-old girl who had come to Calcutta from Uttar Pradesh to attend a wedding at her aunt’s place was crushed under a truck on a lane off BT Road near Paikpara this afternoon.
Traffic in the area was thrown out of gear for over an hour after the incident as residents blocked BT Road, protesting the lack of policing on Raja Manindra Road that hundreds of trucks use through the day.
Kafia was crossing the road around 12.30pm when the truck ran her over. She was declared dead on arrival at RG Kar Hospital.
Hundreds of residents from Gopal Mukherjee Road, where the girl had been putting up at her aunt’s home, and Raja Manindra Road blocked BT Road. The mob smashed the windscreens of some vehicles.
Truck driver Satyanendra Yadav, who was beaten up by residents, has been arrested.
“Trucks often drive recklessly through Raja Manindra Road. There have been several accidents in the area. Despite that, enough policemen were never deployed on the road,” a resident said.
