New Delhi, Aug. 23: The Mumbai gang rape led to an uproar in the Rajya Sabha today with BJP and Congress members trading crime statistics and blaming each other for bad governance that led to such crimes.
The BJP’s Smriti Irani raised the issue during zero hour. “Every time such an incident occurs, representatives of the government come out to give a sound bite to regret it but no action is taken. Till how long will we remain a mute spectator?” she asked.
Irani then reeled off statistics and claimed Congress-ruled Delhi had the maximum number of rapes. Even as she was speaking, the Congress’s Vijaylaxmi Sadho interjected.
“Why is the BJP forgetting statistics regarding Madhya Pradesh, which is governed by the party. Forget women, even men are not safe there,” Sadho, elected from the state, said.
Junior home minister R.P.N. Singh, present in the House then, said: “The Mumbai gang rape is extremely tragic and unfortunate. We have asked for a report from the state government.”
