A woman committed suicide by hanging herself from an arm of a trident light on a busy footpath on Central Avenue on Friday afternoon.
The sight of the sari-clad woman hanging from the lamp post in front of Mahajati Sadan at 4pm sent shock waves through pedestrians. Police later identified the woman as Soma Bakshi, 50, who lived on a footpath.
“I saw a crowd had gathered on the footpath. I peeked through the crowd and saw a woman standing straight on an elevated structure on the footpath. Her body was leaning on a tree trunk. Then I spotted a dupatta by which she was hanging from one of the arms of a trident light beside the tree,” said a student of Calcutta University who was passing by.
“We rushed to the spot within a few minutes of being alerted about the hanging,” said an officer of Jorasanko police station. She was taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. “No one had seen her hanging herself from the trident light. The woman’s husband has been detained.”
