Barasat, Aug. 23: Over 100 villagers, many of them known Trinamul supporters, today overpowered police and took away a person arrested minutes earlier in a murder case at Haroa in North 24-Parganas.
Wajed Ali, in his mid-thirties, had been arrested in connection with the murder of a CPM panchayat pradhan in 2008. Wajed’s elder brother Ajed Ali is a local Trinamul leader.
Wajed, who is among 39 people named in an FIR by slain CPM leader Alauddin Mollah’s wife Sairunnisa Bibi, had been absconding since the murder.
The police arrested Wajed from in front of a paan shop in Haroa around 3.30pm and was taking him to the nearby Atpur camp when the villager and Trinamul supporters stopped their jeep.
“They surrounded the jeep and demanded Wajed’s release. The five policemen led by a sub-inspector tried to pacify the villagers but the mob beat up the cops. They claimed Wajed was innocent. The outnumbered policemen could do nothing to stop the mob from pulling Wajed out of the jeep. He ran away immediately after coming out,” an officer said.
Haji Nurul Islam, the Trinamul MP of Basirhat, said: “Some Trinamul supporters may have been involved in the incident. Our party does not support such activities.”
