Calcutta: Tania Sachdev, representing Air India, is the top seed for the 40th National Women’s Premier Chess Championship, which gets underway at the Spring Club, here, from Sunday.
Twelve players will take part in the competition, jointly organised by the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy and Allsport Management on behalf of the All India Chess Federation and the Bengal Chess Association.
The prize money for this meet is Rs 6 lakh, with the winner taking home Rs 1.75 lakh.
Defending champion Mary Ann Gomes will lead the local challenge.
The other participants are Padmini Rout, Soumya Swaminathan, Bhakti Kulkarni, Nisha Mohota, Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Swathi Ghate, Bodda Pratyusha, Michelle Catherina, Ivana Furtado and Monnisha GK.
The draw will take place on Sunday and the games will be played in round robin format.
The tournament will be the second national chess meet that the city will host in a month.
