Alipurduar, Aug. 22: The Jalpaiguri forest division has decided to boost its arsenal to tranquillise leopards which stray out of the wild and go berserk in human habitats.
“The forest department will build a cage in which a guard can take aim at the marauding leopards with his tranquillising gun. As of now, we plan to make the cage in such a way that it can be pulled near the animal and the armed guard can keep a safe distance. Our guards will also be armed with more tranquillising guns and darts,” said Bidyut Sarkar, the divisional forest officer of Jalpaiguri.
The decision has to do with the forest department’s failure to entrap a leopard that came out of the Dalgaon forest and injured six persons at Chengmari Tari near Falakata on Saturday.
The adult male was finally killed by a mob of 3,000 people, infuriated by the ill-equipped foresters’ failure to tranquillise the animal.
Sarkar also said the department would purchase big nets that keep mobs away from the animals.
