Shillong, Aug. 22: Meghalaya police yesterday arrested members of a gang allegedly involved in extortions in Assam.
Altogether six persons, including two juveniles, were arrested from the Madanriting area on the city’s outskirts in East Khasi Hills district.
Acting on a tip-off by the Guwahati crime branch, a team led by the superintendent of police (city), Vivek Syiem, arrested the culprits after laying a trap.
Those arrested have been identified as Deepak Thapa, 29, Dilbar Ali, 24, Rahidul Amin, 34, and Liakat Ali, 42. Police said they hail from Assam.
According to the police, Ali is the mastermind behind the crimes which were committed by a gang of alleged criminals.
The two juveniles — both 17 years of age — were apprehended from Happy Valley, which is close to Madanriting.
“The apprehended persons were wanted by Assam police for their involvement in extortion cases,” a police officer said.
A case has been registered against them under IPC sections pertaining to extortion, conspiracy and criminal intimidation.
The police also seized a Bolero (registration number AS 01 AV 8068) which was used by them. Meghalaya police will hand over the six persons to an Assam crime branch team.
