The 27-year-old son of a Ranchi businessman shot himself dead after snatching a revolver from his bodyguard and locking himself up in a bathroom at a well-known hotel on Wednesday night.
Prakhar Agrawal, the only son of coal trader Praveen Agrawal, was drunk at the time of the incident that took place at Hotel Capitol Hill in the heart of the city around 10.30pm.
Police are clueless as to what triggered the extreme reaction, saying that preliminary investigations revealed that the youth, who became a father of twin girls just a month ago, had been depressed over some domestic tiff. Prakhar’s private bodyguard Ranjit Kumar, a temp who was standing in for the regular one, and a friend had been detained by police, but they could not offer any substantial information.
A resident of Kanke Road, Prakhar had apparently gone to Hotel Capitol Hill’s bar with two friends on Wednesday. Although little information is available about the circumstances leading to the incident, reports suggest that he snatched Ranjit’s revolver, rushed to a bathroom on the third floor and locked himself in before shooting himself.
Ranjit raised an alarm. Hotel guards and other staff broke open the bathroom door to find a bleeding Prakhar inside. He was rushed to Santevita Hospital near Albert Ekka Chowk — the same place where his wife Kanika had given birth. But doctors declared him brought dead.
“We have registered a case of unnatural death and started investigations. Primary investigations suggested that the youth had a strange behaviour and was addicted to alcohol. He might have been depressed over some family issue,” said deputy superintendent of police (city) P.N. Singh.
Prakhar used to live with his parents and wife at flat No. 310 in Panchwati Apartment on Kanke Road. According to local residents, he married two years ago. Two days later, the family was supposed to perform griha pravesh at their new flat at Rudraksh Apartment in Lalpur.
On Thursday, the flat wore a deserted look with a few women sitting inside a room. None was willing to speak though.
“We have lost a near one. The male members of the family have gone to perform the last rites. Kindly leave us alone,” said a woman when this correspondent tried to speak to her.
The employees at Hotel Capital Hill were also tight-lipped. “We cannot talk. Please contact police for any query. The bathroom in which one of our guests committed suicide has been sealed,” said a security guard.
A police officer said Prakhar’s regular bodyguard Kaushal Agrawal was on leave on Wednesday. In his absence, Ranjeet, a resident of Barpa village at Aurangabad in Bihar, had been roped in.
