They used to play music while robbing their victims. Now, they will face the music for their crimes.
Police have nabbed a gang of nine men — three of them autorickshaw drivers — that used to target lonely passengers looking for public transport after dark. While robbing the passengers in their autorickshaws, the criminals would play music on a loud volume so that their victims’ screams for help would be drowned out.
A special team led by deputy superintendent of police (Sachivalaya) Manish Kumar arrested the criminals — identified as Mohammed Hasan, Mauju Maujar, Kallu Kumar, another Kallu Kumar, Rohit Kumar, Faiyaz Alam, Mohammed Saddam, Mohammed Kamran and Rajiv — on Monday evening.
They are all aged between 23 and 33 years. Two autorickshaws (bearing number plates BR-01-PC-9793 and BR-21G-4531) have been seized, said senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaj. The police codes of these two autos are SN-586 and SN-472, respectively. Maharaj said: “These men were nabbed from Shastri Nagar, Kadamkuan and Rajiv Nagar on the basis of tip-offs. They have confessed two incidents in which they were involved.”
The arrested men have accepted that they robbed a passenger in the Rajapur Pul area on July 30 and another in the Raja Bazar area on August 14.
“We believe that they may have been involved in many more incidents,” said the SSP. Describing their modus operandi, he added: “The gang members used to loot passengers who boarded their autorickshaws after dark. While carrying out their crimes, they would play the latest film songs so that the cries of the victims went unheard.”
Mohammed Hasan, Rohit Kumar and Kallu Kumar are auto drivers.
They used to move around in their vehicles during the night, looking for lonely passengers. The drivers would always be accompanied by two or three members of their gang, who would pose as passengers. Once their victim was in the vehicle, they would put on the music. “They would usually play item numbers from recent films,” said a police officer.
The SSP said: “The gang members are being interrogated.”

Two 9mm pistols, two countrymade pistols, four live cartridges and two motorbikes have been recovered from them.
