Behrampore, Aug. 18: A young woman in Murshidabad has accused an additional police superintendent, who had advised her during her divorce, of sending her lewd text messages and making indecent proposals over phone.
The Jiaganj woman, in her twenties, has said in her complaint to the superintendent of police that Mrinal Majumdar asked her to come to his bungalow and stay with him ever since the woman obtained the mutual divorce in January this year.
“When I refused to go to his bungalow and stopped responding to the text messages and calls, he became furious and threatened to implicate me in a false case,” she said.
Majumdar has refuted the allegations. “The woman has brought a false charge against me,” the additional SP (rural) said.
District superintendent of police Humayun Kabir said he had would “personally” investigate the case.
“The woman’s security would be taken care of,” he added.
Jiaganj police yesterday arrested a male friend of the woman from New Alipore in Calcutta on the charge of stealing a car.
The woman alleged that the arrest was on Majumdar’s instructions.
The woman said the arrested youth, Shantanu Murmu, had helped her with money after her divorce and also got her a house and shop on rent in New Alipore, where the lady now lives.
“I am indebted to Shantanu. After my divorce, when Majumdar had been sending me indecent proposals over phone, he stood by me. The police have implicated him in a false case under instruction from the additional SP,” the woman said.
Shantanu has been remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody.
Asked about the arrest, Majumdar said: “Shantanu Murmu was arrested on a complaint of car theft lodged by the woman’s ex-husband.”
The woman’s former husband, a businessman in Azimganj in Murshidabad, could not be contacted.
The woman had married the businessman in 2005 but five years later, they filed for divorce. The childless couple obtained their mutual divorce this January.
“My husband tortured me mentally and physically. Both of us had filed cases against each other,” she said.
According to the woman, she met Mukherjee at the end of 2012 when the divorce suit was on. She said the additional SP had called up Jiaganj police station and had instructed officers to help her.
The woman alleged that she was forced to leave Jiaganj, afraid after the additional SP started sending her the indecent text messages. She now runs a stationery shop and lives in a rented home in New Alipore.
