Agartala, Aug. 18: A woman school teacher who belonged to an indigenous community was run over by an empty petrol tanker in the Chhankhola area under Khoai subdivision of Tripura this morning.
Two deputy superintendents of police, a sub-inspector of state police and the officer-in-charge of Khowai police station sustained serious injuries as a mob comprising over 200 indigenous people stormed the Baizolbari police outpost under Khowai subdivision and ransacked it following the accident.
The incident took place between 11 and 11.50 this morning.
Police sources said the empty petrol tanker bound for Dharmanagar in North Tripura en route to Assam was passing through the Chhankhola area around 11am when Nivarani Debbarma, 28, who was riding a scooter, clashed with the tanker (AS-01-BC-1475).
Driver of the tanker Samsul Haq, 33, who did not know that Debbarma had died on the spot, stopped the tanker to see if she could be taken to a hospital.
By that time, a mob from the nearby areas gathered at the accident site. While Samsul jumped into a roadside ditch, his assistant Ayaz, 24, was severely beaten up.
The news of the accident reached nearby Baizolbari police outpost and a contingent of police reached the spot and managed to rescue Ayaz in an injured condition. The situation worsened after a constable slapped a young man who belongs to an indigenous community for abusing him.
The situation soon spiralled out of control.
A pitched battle broke out till the OC of Khowai police station, Asish Deb, reached the spot with reinforcements.
