Calcutta: Kamal Chawla overcame Brijesh Damani’s challenge to reach the semi-finals of the Big Bazaar National 9-Ball Championship, being held at the Spring Club, on Saturday.
In a closely fought quarter final tie, Chawla got the better of local favourite Damani 10-8. It turned out to be an eventful day for Kamal as he had to make quite a few comebacks after trailing his rivals initially.
Chawla will meet Sundeep Gulati in the semis on Sunday. Sundeep edged out Manan Chandra 10-9 in the quarter final.
In the other men’s semi-final, Sumeet Talwar will clash with Malkeet Singh. While Sumit beat Lalrina Renthlei 10-4 in the quarters, Malkeet, a junior national snooker champion, had to fight hard against Dilip Kumar before having the last laugh with a 10-8 win.
In the women’s section, Karnataka’s Judy Walia will face statemate Indira Gowda in Sunday’s title decider.
Judy won her semi-final match against Tamil Nadu’s Neena Praveen 6-3. Indira overcame Bengal’s Suniti Damani by an identical margin.
