Burdwan, Aug. 16: A Burdwan Trinamul leader was today shot dead allegedly by members of a rival faction that wanted to avenge the death of a party worker on the day of the panchayat elections on July 15.
Kasem Kazi, four of whose loyalists contested as Independents on being denied tickets by Trinamul, was shot dead by bike-borne youths in Mangalkot. Sources said the assailants were followers of Bashed Ali, who leads a faction opposed to Kasem’s.
Bashed, said to be close to Birbhum Trinamul chief Anubrata Mondal, could not be contacted. Police said supporters of Bashed and Kasem had clashed with bombs in Mangalkot since the morning on the day of polling. One of the bombs hit Saidullah Mullick, who died on the spot.
Kasem had gone to a hospital in Burdwan town today to see a relative. He was shot four times on his way home.
