Aug. 16: A Trinamul worker with alleged links to coal smugglers has been arrested in connection with the murder of party leader Ashok Ghosh in Birbhum’s Khoirashol.
Five persons, including a Trinamul panchayat samiti member and an Independent who contested the panchayat polls unsuccessfully with the party’s backing, have been arrested so far. Ghosh was shot dead on August 12.
Police said Sheikh Selim, in his early thirties, was picked up on Wednesday night from his home in Dahapara in Kendragaria near Ghosh’s home and arrested yesterday.
“Selim told us he had passed on information on Ghosh’s movements to the assailants, two of whom have been arrested. We have found out that Selim had links with coal pilferers,” an officer said.
Trinamul sources said Selim was close to party block president Ashok Mukherjee, an accused in the case who is absconding. Mukherjee is known to be close to Birbhum Trinamul president Anubrata Mondal.
Selim was today remanded in three days’ police custody.
Trinamul all-India general secretary Mukul Roy today said at the party headquarters in Calcutta: “We suspect that Maoists or the coal mafia are involved in the murder.”
The Congress MP from Murshidabad’s Jangipur, Abhijit Mukherjee, today visited Ghosh’s home. “Ashok Ghosh was earlier with the Congress. We knew each other and he was close to our family,” he said.
