Calcutta: East Bengal beat Bhowanipore Club 2-0 in a practice match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. Alvito D’Cunha and Baljit Singh Sahni scored early into the match.
In another practice game at Basirhat, Charan Rai, Monirul and Israil Gurung scored as Mohammedan Sporting defeated New Bani Sangha 3-0.
East Bengal’s Edeh Chidi, James Moga and Uga Okpara played only in the second session and it was an opportunity for Marcos Falopa to test their bench strength.
However, the performance was hardly enterprising to enthuse the coach. He didn’t mince words when it came to evaluate his team’s showing.
“I am still not too satisfied with how the team is playing. They still need a little more time to settle down,” said Falopa after the match.
“There are problems in movement and mobility, especially among the foreigners. They need to work hard… It was good to see Alvito score, but he too can improve…”
Alvito seemed aware of his shortcomings. “It always feels nice when you score. But it’s not something worth rejoicing when you score in a practice tie.
“With Americo (goalkeeper coach-cum-physical trainer) working on my fitness, I should be able to put up a better performance when the season begins,” said Alvito.
Bhowanipore dominated in the latter stages of the match and could even have scored.
