Golaghat, Aug. 14: The Golaghat district unit of AASU today demanded the arrest and suspension of additional deputy commissioner of Golaghat, Krishna Barua and the gaonbura (village head) of Gorbasti village in Merapani, Bhodo Chutia, for allegedly paying Rs 4,400 as land revenue to chairman of Mikirang village council of Nagaland.
AASU said the plot of land for which the amount was paid falls under Assam’s territorial jurisdiction.
At a news conference held today, the central executive committee member of AASU, Monowar Hussain, said last year’s standoff between Assam and Nagaland over 250 bighas of arable land in the Gorbasti area of Merapani had been settled by paying land revenue to the Nagaland administration and thereby accepting Nagaland’s domination over the plot of land.
Hussain also showed a copy of the resolution of the meeting dated July 22 between the Mikirang village council of Nagaland and gaonbura of Gorbasti village held at the office of the additional deputy commissioner of Bhandari subdivision of Wokha district of Nagaland.
It was resolved that the farmers of Gorbasti shall have to pay yearly khazana (land revenue) within April every year and those who will fail to pay khazana within the stipulated time shall not be allowed to cultivate.
Hussain said it was the result of reckless behaviour of the state government on the border issue as a result of which a gaonbura with the help of additional deputy commissioner of Golaghat can take such steps.
“The state government is not at all serious about the border issue and that is why when Nagaland has appointed four border magistrates for A, B, C and D sectors, the Assam government has wrapped up its responsibility by appointing only two border magistrates for the four sectors.”
“The payment of khazana to Bhandari subdivision of a neighbouring state is just like handing over land to Bangladesh by the government,” Hussain said.
The students’ body also threatened to intensify agitation if actions were not taken against Barua and Chutia.
