Kokrajhar, Aug. 14: Suspected NDFB (Songbijit faction) militants today lobbed two grenades at two different places in Chirang district ahead of Independence Day.
The militants lobbed a grenade at Chapaguri police point under Dhaligaon police station along National Highway 31(C) in Chirang district around 8.40am.
Sources said two persons came on a bike and lobbed the grenade targeting policemen but missed the target and fled the spot. No one was hurt in the explosion. Police later recovered the Pulsar bike bearing registration no. AS16A4371 from a field near Simlaguri, a few km away.
In another incident, a grenade exploded at Domgaon under Bengtol police post. However, no one was injured in the incident.
Security has been intensified in sensitive areas ahead of Independence Day in the four BTAD districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri. “All possible steps have been taken to thwart any evil designs by divisive elements. The forces are on high alert in these areas,” a senior police official in Kokrajhar said.
He said security has intensify patrolling along the India-Bhutan border areas and the inter-state Assam-Bengal border areas along with all pockets areas where rebels are active, he said adding that security measures have been tightened at railway tracks, highways, oil installations, and all important areas and places in lower Assam.
The district magistrate has also promulgated CrPC 144 in the respective districts preventing pillion riding in two wheelers to check terrorism and shall remain in force until further orders.
