Golaghat, Aug. 14: A man was killed and five others were injured when a raging bull attacked them.
The bull first assaulted an elderly woman yesterday at Bata Point in the town. The woman, identified as Taramai Tanti, was trying to cross the road when the bull suddenly appeared and attacked her from behind. She sustained head injuries and is now undergoing treatment at Golaghat civil hospital.
After this incident, the bull went on a rampage again and injured four other persons.
The bull then entered the busy Court Road area and created panic there till evening. It later took shelter on the premise of the office of the circle officer.
This morning, the bull became extremely aggressive and attacked a person with his horn and killed him.
The brutal attack tore apart the intestines of the victim, identified as Kolamoni Saikia, 50.
Senior police officers, veterinary and forests department officials rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. Traffic restrictions were also imposed.
The situation returned to normal after the bull was tranquilised and shifted from the area.
Dr Prasanta Boro of the Artificial Insemination Centre, Bokakhat, who tranquilised the bull, told The Telegraph that the bull might have been infected with rabies as was evident from the symptoms, including drooling of saliva, redness of eyes and a tendency to attack people. The bull will be kept under physical observation at the veterinary hospital at Arengapara.
If it was a confirmed case of rabies infection, then the bull will not survive for more than three days as it will feel agitated at the sight of water and not drink, Boro said.
