New Delhi, Aug. 14: The Gorkhaland issue rocked the Lok Sabha briefly today when Jaswant Singh, the BJP MP from Darjeeling, pleaded for a “political resolution” and invited Trinamul charges of “trying to divide Bengal”.
A Trinamul member, Kalyan Banerjee, rushed to the well of the House shouting “shame shame Jaswantji” after Jaswant urged the Centre to call the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and the Bengal government for talks.
Jaswant’s BJP colleague, Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj, alleged that the way Banerjee “charged, it seemed he would beat up” the Darjeeling MP.
Banerjee’s unseemly behaviour took the House by surprise, led to an adjournment and he had to express regret after Sushma protested the first-time MP’s “behaviour towards a senior member” saying “Mamata Banerjee will never endorse” it.
“The way Kalyan Banerjee charged, it seemed he would beat up Jaswantji…. I am sure his leader Mamata Banerjee will never endorse his behaviour,” Sushma said when the House reconvened after the adjournment.
But the Serampore MP claimed Mamata had “not disapproved of his conduct” and added he would go to any extent to stop the division of Bengal.
“I spoke to my leader. She has not disapproved of my conduct…. But if I have hurt the sentiments of a senior member, I express regret,” he said.
