A domestic help stole gold, diamond-studded jewellery and Rs 1.75 lakh from his employer’s house over more than a month.
Bhagwat Rai, 45, was arrested on Wednesday, a day after his employer Prayag Das Daga lodged a police complaint. A gold bar weighing 100 grams, 10 gold coins, three gold bangles encrusted with diamonds, a gold necklace and some cash were recovered from Rai’s Bankura home.
Rai, who had been working in the Daga household on Sarat Bose Road for five years, stole a few items every time he went home over the past month and a half. “Our primary suspect was Rai as we learnt that he had been to his hometown several times since the time the Dagas started missing things in the house,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, the joint commissioner (crime).
Police sources said Rai had confessed to his crime.
