Calcutta: Mouma Das was pleasantly surprised when national table tennis coach Bhawani Mukherjee broke the news of her name being recommended for the Arjuna Award on Tuesday.
Mouma had been nominated for the Award for the last three years but failed to win the favour of the jury. Mouma, though, wasn’t expecting to win the Award this year as well. I am thrilled. I was not expecting the Award at all. It’s a pleasant surprise. I didn’t even know that the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) had nominated my name till a certain point in time.
“My husband and my father intimated me of the TTFI’s decision several days later. Since I could not win the Award for the last three years, I gave up all hope… I only concentrated on performing well,” the paddler said.
Mouma became the fifth paddler from the state after Mantu Ghosh, Soumyadip Roy, Subhajit Saha and Poulami Ghatak to be awarded the Arjuna.
