Guwahati, Aug. 13: Holders NF Railway Sports Club clinched their second straight victory in the Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super Division Football League edging past Sunrise Athletic Club 2-1 in a third round encounter on the first turf in Nehru Stadium here today.
Starting with a goalless draw against Navajyoti Club, the railmen tamed Food Corporation of India SC 4-0 in their second match.
Sunrise started with a 1-1 draw against former champions Assam State Electricity Board SC and then shocked second division I-League side Green Valley SC 1-0 before conceding defeat today.
It was a self goal off a header by stopper Sanjay Nag at the goalmouth while trying to clear a Sibra Narzary free kick from the 40-yard zone in the 24th minute that proved costly for the Sunrise side.
The first half was invariably in the railmen’s domination. It also witnessed the second goal through striker Jelendra Brahma in the 41st minute.
Brahma, who was on the prowl inside the danger zone, made no mistake in heading in a powerful long ranger from the top of the box by Bapa Biswas that was fisted away by custodian Shanti Ranjan Das.
The railmen got another opportunity in the 37th minute when Duleswar Rabha managed to beat glovesman Das but was brilliantly cleared at the goalline by Sunrise skipper Pranab Ghosh.
Unlike in the first half, it was the Sunrise men who took command of the second session right from the word go. The efforts yielded results as early as in the 55th minute when striker Bhumeshor Singh, lurking inside the penalty area, got a Kailash Gogoi pass from the right flank to shoot in a spectacular goal.
With the margin reduced, the Sunrise men maintained the attacking tempo almost throughout the session and initiated moves one after another.
NF Railway’s seasoned custodian K. Bijen Singh deserves kudos for making some brilliant saves to clinch the match away.
Tomorrow, Navajyoti Club will lock horns with Dynamo Club.
A Division League: On the second turf of the same ground, Sports Authority of India (SAI) SC today inflicted a 4-1 defeat on Abutani SC to register their first victory in the Jibeswar Goswami Guwahati first division league.
