A 19-year-old girl from Hazaribagh, who committed suicide early this month, left behind a note, accusing her fiancé of abetting her death by sexually exploiting her and demanding dowry.
Bharti, a resident of Rud village in Ichak, consumed poison on August 1. She was rushed to RIMS, Ranchi, where she died the next day. But a case was lodged against her fiancé Ajay Sao, a constable posted in Giridih, only on Monday as Ranchi police, who registered the girl’s statement before her death, took time to send the papers to their Hazaribagh counterparts. Ajay is yet to be arrested.
Hazaribagh’s Sadar police have seized the suicide note from the teen’s home in which the undergraduate student of KB Women’s College sought forgiveness from her parents. She said she was unable to bear Ajay’s torture any more.
The girl’s farmer father, Jaichand Sao, had fixed her marriage with Ajay of Oriya village in Muffasil police station area. The marriage date was yet to be fixed.
“Ajay met the girl regularly and eventually forced her into a sexual relationship. But she never told her parents anything as Ajay had threatened to leave her if she breathed a word to anyone. However, the situation came to a head when he started forcing her to ask her father to pay a dowry of Rs 4.5 lakh,” said a relative.
Bharti’s letter says she had recorded Ajay’s wrongdoings on her cellphone.
Sadar OC Dinesh Kumar Singh said: “We did not have information about the case. Last evening, I received a copy of the girl’s statement from Bariatu police (Ranchi) after which an FIR was lodged against Ajay,” he said, promising to arrest the accused soon.
