Calcutta/Johannesburg: South Africa coach Russell Domingo wants Jacques Kallis to play some ODI cricket before the 2015 World Cup if the all-rounder wants to be a part of the team.
“If Jacques wants to play in the 2015 World Cup, he will have to play some ODI cricket for us along the way. It will not be fair on other players if it doesn’t happen that way,” he said.
[Kallis, in May earlier this year, had told The Telegraph that he intends playing in the 2015 Cup. “The really big 50-over tournament is the World Cup... I’m not quitting ODIs and intend playing in the 2015 World Cup. Let’s see how it goes between now and then,” he said.]
Kallis has not played an ODI in almost 18 months after former coach Gary Kirsten felt it is “no longer necessary” for the all-rounder to play in bilateral series because he was too important to South Africa’s Test ambitions.
But now, Domingo’s decision may force Kallis to make a decision on his ODI future. But Domingo has made it clear that he will not follow Kirsten’s methods. “As a South African unit, we’ve got to be able to live without Kallis,” he said.
