Guwahati, Aug. 12: Assam Police Blues went down by a solitary goal against Food Corporation of India (FCI) SC in their third outing of Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super Division Football League at Nehru Stadium here today.
The cops initiated a number of moves in either half of the match but goals simply eluded them.
The policemen had settled for a 1-1 draw in their first match against Dynamo Club and went down 0-1 against debutants Navajyoti Club in the second match.
In an evenly-poised encounter, the FCI side found the net for the all-important goal through the boot of striker Rakesh Das who, receiving a midfield pass from Birdwm Basumatary, managed to dodge past the opponent’s defence to beat glovesman Ranjit Chutia from the danger zone in the 63rd minute.
FCI, too, got several scoring opportunities but lacked the co-ordination and finishing touch.
Apart from the goal scored, the only other possibly lethal shot was from the boot of Das whose back-volley from a goalmouth tussle in the 43rd minute was brilliantly fisted away by custodian Chutia.
Ten minutes into the second session, FCI got another opportunity, but this was squandered by Bishwajit Swargiary, who failed to place a calculated pass by Das inside the box past the glovesman in a one-on-one situation.
It was the first win for FCI today. They lost their earlier outings against Green Valley SC and NF Railway SC by identical margins of 2-0.
Sunrise Athletic Club will play NF Railway tomorrow.
Division soccer: In the Jibeswar Goswami first division league match played on the second turf of the same ground, Rising XI Club got the better of Rajbari Athletic Club 1-0.
After a barren first half, Swmdwm Basumatary headed in a flag kick by Rajesh Rabha for the match-winning goal in the 62nd minute.
The match was otherwise a taut affair with both sides employing superb soccer skills and grit.
Tomorrow, Sports Authority of India SC will meet Abutani SC.
