Ranchi, Aug. 12: MLA Bandhu Tirkey did not keep his date with a CBI court hearing a disproportionate assets case against him today, prompting the agency to seek an arrest warrant against the Independent MLA who has gone into a sulk for not being made a minister in lieu of his support to the Hemant Soren government.
The CBI’s request for a warrant came amidst a petition moved by Tirkey’s lawyer seeking another hearing after which the CBI court of R.K. Choudhary fixed September 12 as the next date.
“We have prayed for an arrest warrant against the MLA. We are waiting for further directions of the court,” CBI lawyer Sanjiv Yadav said.
The CBI court had on August 1 issued a notice to the MLA, asking him to appear before it today.
Tirkey’s lawyer, Sanjay Kumar, said he sought another hearing as the issue of disproportionate assets was pending before Jharkhand High Court where Tirkey had moved a plea to quash a lower court order taking cognisance of the alleged offence.
During earlier hearings, the CBI court had dismissed a CBI closure report that gave a clean chit to the MLA. The closure report of May 21 said the MLA’s assets were only Rs 6.5 lakh in excess of known sources of income between 2005 and 2009, and that the amount seemed to be “insignificant”.
