A man working as a lawyer’s clerk was allegedly kidnapped from in front of the Hiland Park taxi stand, off the Bypass, on Sunday morning.
Police said they rescued Manish Biswas, 31, from a central Calcutta guest house on Monday morning but learnt that the kidnappers had targetted someone else and picked him up by mistake.
The three alleged kidnappers who have been arrested are Saugata Ghosh, 31, Sanatan Haldar, 30, and Saurav Dey, 23. The police said the three had hatched the kidnap plan after coming across a newspaper advertisement seeking a kidney for a person with B+ blood group.
“They contacted the person who had published the advertisement and asked him to meet them near Hiland Park. The accused thought the person was rich and ready to shell out lakhs for a kidney. They told the person that they would call him up once they reached the spot,” said a police officer of the central division.
The trio reached the spot around 9am and called the advertiser’s mobile number, the police said. “Right then they spotted Manish answer a call on his cell phone. They thought Manish was the person who had published the advertisement, forced him into a vehicle and took him to a guest house on Baithakkhana Road in central Calcutta,” said the officer.
“Even after realising their mistake, they demanded Rs 30,000 from Manish. Pretending to convey the ransom demand to his employer, he contacted the advocate, told him about his confinement and the location.” The advocate alerted Muchipara police, who rescued the Hooghly resident on Monday morning.
Dinanath Barui, 33, was arrested on the charge of raping an eight-year-old girl in Chitpore on Sunday night.
Mohammad Nasir, 21, was seriously injured when the two-wheeler he was riding skidded and went under a lorry on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road on Monday. Pillion-rider Rabi Sharma, 21, a home guard, suffered minor injuries.
