Mahindra Retail has debuted in the Northeast through the franchisee route to reach out to a larger clientele in a short time.
The retail subsidiary of the $16.2 billion Mahindra Group opened its first Mom & Me outlet — a one-stop maternity and baby products shop — in Guwahati this month.
The company currently has 113 Mom & Me outlets in the country and has opened a majority of these on its own in the past five years.
“We have been aggressively spreading our footprint across the country as the demand for our stores has been quite high. Hence, to reach out to a larger audience at a faster pace, Mom & Me has now started operations via the franchisee model as well. We already have a significant footprint in the east with three outlets in Calcutta, one in Siliguri and another in Cuttack, and are now delighted to open our doors in the Northeast,” said Mahindra Retail chief executive officer K. Venkataraman. “We also believe that every Indian mother deserves the very best for her child and herself and our dream is to take Mom & Me to every mother in every part of India.”
With the Indian organised retail market in expansion mode, Mahindra Group considers this a favourable time to extend its business into direct retailing.
The 2,039 square feet store at Christian Basti provides a unique shopping experience with maternity and children’s apparel, mother and baby wellness, baby furniture and furnishings, toys, among other items, on offer.
“Mom & Me has been built around the unique needs of mothers to be, young mothers, infants and children up to the age of nine. The absence of a single retail outlet addressing mother and child products and non-medical advisory needs is the most critical gap the store seeks to bridge. We have invested about Rs 80 lakh on the store, which is on a par with the best Mom & Me store in the country,” said Rajiv Jain, proprietor of the outlet.
Mother and baby care products were only available in multi-brand outlets in the Northeast prior to the Mahindra venture.
“From the best of branded perambulators and custom-made cradles made of material imported from New Zealand to infant apparel, shoes and accessories to soft toys, the retail outlet has everything at value-for-money prices,” Jain added.
