A man was killed and three other men and a woman were injured after being knocked down by a car that had lost control while plying down a VIP Road service lane near Lake Town on Sunday afternoon.
The man who died has been identified as Sajal Kumar Das, a resident of Bongaon in North 24-Parganas. Police said he had come to Lake Town in search of odd jobs.
The police said the driver of the blue Indica, Rakesh Yadav, had lost control after mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake while teaching the owner’s daughter how to drive and hit pedestrians on Golaghata Road, a service road beside the airport-bound flank of VIP Road, before ramming into a lamp post.
Yadav has been arrested and the car seized. The 30-year-old has been booked under IPC Section 304A —causing death by negligence. If convicted, he can be jailed for up to two years.
The police said the car was owned by Pawan Gupta but did not reveal any more details about him.
“Yadav was teaching the car owner’s 15-year-old daughter how to drive around 4.30pm when the accident occurred. The driver said during interrogation that he had pressed the accelerator by mistake instead of the brake,” said an officer of Lake Town police station.
“It’s a busy road and following prolonged showers, it was slippery, too. The accused should not have held a teaching session on such a road even if the girl had insisted,” the officer added.
Das, 55, was taken to a nursing home where he was declared dead.
Maniktala resident Santanu Seth, 40, suffered a fracture in his right ankle.
Manisha Debi, 35, a resident of Gaighata in North 24-Parganas, suffered head, leg and spine injuries. She was returning home from a relative’s house in Lake Town when the accident occurred.
Bhola Roy, 34, of Barrackpore, and Rabin Das, 28, of Bongaon, too, suffered multiple injuries. Seth has been admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and others to a Lake Town nursing home.
