Calcutta: Bengal’s Mitrabha Guha won both the games on the second day of the National sub-junior under-15 chess meet, organised by Bengal Chess Association, at the Bidhan Shishu Udyan complex, here on Wednesday.
Guha, a product of The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championships, defeated Kshitij Sharma of Chhatisgarh in the morning and then got the better of statemate Kaustav Bhattacharya later in the day.
Top seed Diptayan Ghosh was made to struggle by lowly-rated A Visveshwar. IM Diptayan opted for French Defence against his opponent from Tamil Nadu.
In the middlegame after some exchanges, Diptayan reached a better position with two bishops and a knight against his rival’s two knights. After a gruelling battle of 56 moves, Diptayan finally overcame Visveshwar.
On the second board, Bengal boy Subhayan Kundu put up a gallant fight against title aspirant Murali Karthikeyan before losing in 53 moves. In the third round, Murali agreed to split point with statemate Ajay Krishna after 52 moves.
Unseeded GK Monnisha of Tamil Nadu had to dig deep before overcoming statemate Dharani Sree.
Arvindh Chithambaram, M Mahalakshmi and R Vaishali recorded easy wins over Raghav Shrivastsav, Khushi Dharewa and Chandreyee Hazra respectively in the second round.
In the third round, Bengal girls Chandreyee Hazra, Shinjini Sengupta, Arpita Mukherjee, Samriddhaa Ghosh and Shyamshree Sarkar registered victories.
