Tezpur, Aug. 7: Tirap superintendent of police Vikramjit Singh said four police personnel were suspended today because of alleged negligence of their duties after seven prisoners lodged in Khonsa sub-jail in the district escaped.
“There was no electricity in the area for the past three days and the inmates took advantage of incessant rain last night. The jail authorities came to know about the jailbreak in the morning and a search was launched. Sniffer dogs of Assam Rifles were pressed into action but they lost the scent as it rained heavily at night,” Singh said.
This is the third jailbreak in the state in recent times after 18 undertrials escaped from a lock-up at Chowkham police outpost in Lohit district on July 19. In February, 15 prisoners involved in raping a minor in Chowkham escaped from the prison after scaling the walls. Police, however, re-arrested them in April.
