Kamduni residents on Wednesday formed a forum to fight for “justice for the college girl” who was raped and murdered two months ago.
Nearly 200 villagers assembled near a local club at a programme in memory of the victim and formed the forum, called Pratibadi Mancha, Kamduni (Protest Forum of Kamduni).
“We have formed this forum to plan our course of action for justice for the girl and her family,” said Bhaskar Mondal, one of the members.
The memorial programme started around 5pm and continued till 6.30pm. The villagers walked 1.5km from the ground to the Kamduni bus stop, where they lit candles in front of a plaque put up in memory of the girl.
“I appeal to all of you to stay united and fight in an apolitical manner, as we have done so far,” said Mousumi Kayal, with Tumpa Kayal beside her. The duo, the faces of Kamduni protest, were branded Maoists and CPM agents after they tried to talk to the chief minister during her visit to the village following the rape and murder. A huge police force kept vigil as the procession wound its way to the bus stop.
Family members of the girl are happy that a forum has been formed. “It seems the culprits will be let off or will get minimal punishment if we don’t organise a movement,” said the elder brother of the victim.
