Calcutta: IM Diptayan Ghosh and FM Arvindh Chithambaram started in fine fashion in the National Sub-junior Under-15 Chess meet that got underway, at the Bidhan Shishu Udyan, on Tuesday. The tournament features 238 participants — 148 boys and 90 girls.
Diptayan, going into this competition after winning gold in the World Youth (under-16) Chess Olympiad in China, broke little sweat to negate the challenge of Goa’s Deeptesh Karmalkar.
Arvindh, though, was stretched to a certain extent by local boy Dipanjan Chowdhury.
Arvindh played with Najdorf opening and Dipanjan with the English one before the former wrapped up the game in 27 moves, just as Diptayan did.
Among others, IM Murali Karthikeyan and FM Mitrabha Guha began on a good note along with Ritabroto Ganguly and Srijit Paul.
In the girls’ section, Shardha Kucheria tried her best to upset N. Mahalakshmi, but eventually surrendered to the quality of the top seed. Mahalakshmi took 27 games to seal the issue.
