Calcutta: Edeh Chidi’s success story in Indian football started in Sporting Clube de Goa colours. He had scored plenty of goals and his combination with Dudu Obagbemi was the reason behind Clube finishing runners-up in the 2004-05 NFL.
Cut to 2013, Chidi now wishes to replicate the success that he achieved with Dudu when he partners James Moga in East Bengal colours in the upcoming season.
“Dudu and I had a wonderful understanding… That was the reason behind our success when we played together… I want to develop that same sort of understanding with Moga… If we click together, we can pose a huge threat,” said the Nigerian striker.
Chidi’s words will certainly please the East Bengal fans. Last season, East Bengal were robbed of numerous goal-scoring opportunities because they didn’t have a quality forward who could complement Chidi. With East Bengal recruiting the in-form Moga and Ryuji Sueoka, the expectations have magnified.
Chidi seems to be aware of the huge expectations.
“We have a very balanced side… We have a complete team this season… There is no reason why we cannot win the I-League. The combination between Moga, Sueoka and me will be extremely crucial to our success. They were in ominous form last season… If they can carry that form this season, we can work wonders,” said Chidi. Chidi said the pressure would be less on him due to the arrival of Moga and Sueoka.
“Last season, I was under tremendous pressure to perform and score goals. The arrival of Moga and Sueoka will certainly take the pressure off me… They are both quality players and we have to perform in unison.”
