Tura, Aug. 5: Police in Dalu in West Garo Hills district, 52km from Tura, took 14-year-old Nobojyoti Koch into custody on Saturday for allegedly raping his four-year-old neighbour in Salbaripara village.
The accused has been sent to a juvenile home in Tura, 323km from Shillong.
In another incident, a 23-year-old woman with multiple disabilities identified a neighbour who had been sexually abusing her for several months in Arengre village in South West Garo Hills district.
The matter came to light a week ago after the victim was found pregnant and her parents informed the Association of Challenged People in Meghalaya, which sent a delegation to the village.
“Since her parents were unable to understand her sign language we went to her place. Tests were conducted, which found her six months pregnant. She identified her neighbour as the accused who had been sexually abusing her,” said president of the association Milip A. Sangma this evening.
The accused was identified as Anan D. Sangma from the same village. “We are going to approach the State Women’s Commission to get justice and initiate action against the accused,” the association members said.
There has been a rise in the number of cases of sexual assaults on women and children in the state, particularly in the Garo hills. A young girl was gangraped in Williamnagar town of East Garo Hills last December during the winter festival. Altogether 16 perpetrators of the crime, mostly teenagers, were caught and remanded in juvenile homes.
Two months ago, a police sub-inspector allegedly raped two teenagers in Ampati town of South West Garo Hills. The officer, who was initially ‘arrested’ and detained in the home of another officer here, managed to escape and has since been on the run.
