Guwahati, Aug. 5: Green Valley Sports Club edged past FCI Sports Club 2-1 in the Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Super Division football league organised by Guwahati Sports Association at Nehru Stadium here today.
Green Valley, after being a goal down, converted two in quick succession to seal the match in the second half.
Earlier, a barren first half saw Green Valley take the upper hand with the reliable Maneswar Mushahary taking two shots at the goal in the 10th and 16th minutes respectively. A smart shower had of course rendered the ground a little slushy with the heavy underfoot conditions not making it easy for the players to hold their balance while shooting or trapping.
The second half was the best phase that the league so far could see, as it witnessed a see-saw battle till the 60th minute.
In the 58th minute, FCI playmaker David March Goyari took advantage of a defence lapse to score the first goal off a parallel centre pass from the left flank. The tempo of the match, though, picked up considerably thereafter with an apparent spring in the steps of the FCI men.
However, Green Valley players chose to go on the offensive rather than the other way. A barrage of moves paid dividends as stalwart Thomson Langthasa and the fleet-footed Michael Lucky Kelechuke came to the party to score a goal each in the 65th and 69th minutes respectively.
Green Valley thereafter had the match in their grip and held on to their lead till the final whistle.
The result also broke the shackles somewhat as none of the three previous matches so far could produce a result in the league. Tomorrow, Dynamo Club will lock horns with ASEB Sports Club.
In contrast, the Jibeswar Goswami A Division football league held on the other ground of Nehru Stadium saw a goal feast yet again, with Ganga Sports Club thrashing Rajbari Athletic Club 9-1.
