New Delhi, Aug. 5 (PTI): The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to frame rules to restrict the use of red beacons and sirens to only persons holding constitutional posts.
A bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and V. Gopala Gowda asked the government to impose heavy and exemplary fine on its wrong use and granted two weeks’ time to the Centre to respond.
“How can citizens be treated differently?” the bench said while referring to the problems faced by people when VIPs with high-security cover move in vehicles with beacons and sirens.
“It is a menace to society,” it said, adding such misuse “should be dealt with heavy hands and exemplary fine imposed”. The bench was hearing a PIL filed by a Uttar Pradesh resident on misuse of beacons.
