The eldest of three brothers from Metiabruz accused by their wives of rape, molestation, dowry torture and blackmail was arrested on Monday.
The man was arrested from his home early in the morning and produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate in Alipore court.
His wife had lodged a complaint on July 18, accusing him and his parents of torture. She also alleged that her husband was impotent and that this information had not been disclosed at the time of marriage. “He told me that he was under medication and would be cured within six months. I spoke to my mother-in-law when there was no improvement after six months. She reacted strangely, as if she was aware of her son’s problem,” the woman had mentioned in her complaint.
Magistrate Umesh Singh on Monday directed the police to conduct a medical test on the accused to confirm the allegation of impotency.
The woman had also accused her younger brother-in-law of repeated rape. “He has raped me several times.... When I said I would report the matter to the police, my brother-in-law showed me a video clip of him raping me and threatened to circulate it on the Internet,” she had said.
The middle brother, an army jawan, is posted in Rajasthan and yet to be arrested.
“In this case, we don’t need the army’s permission to arrest the accused. We have to formally inform the army after arresting him,” an officer at Metiabruz police station said.
The middle brother’s wife, too, had lodged a complaint of torture against her husband, who she allegedly saw sexually assault her elder sister-in-law. The younger sister-in-law also accused the youngest brother of molesting her.
Both the women had accused the police of failing to act on their complaints of brutality by members of their family. Avishek Mukherjee, lawyer for the two victims, opposed a bail petition moved by the lawyer of the accused.
“It is a case of extreme brutality that no one in our society can imagine. The accused allowed his brother to rape his wife. He never tried to save the woman. Instead, he used to torture her,” Mukherjee mentioned in his submission. The accused was remanded in police custody for seven days.
