MLA stick

Mumbai, July 26: Two legislators were suspended from the Assembly today for using “unparliamentary” language.

Shiv Sena MLC Diwakar Raote used foul language during a debate on an irrigation scam. MNS MLA Praveen Darekar was suspended for uttering an obscene word on the floor of the House when the Opposition was walking out the issue of the city’s development.

Murder trial

Mumbai: A Mumbai sessions court has convicted the wife and son of gangster Suresh Bhagat for killing him. Bhagat, who controlled the matka gambling dens in Maharashtra, died in a road accident in 2008. The sentence will be pronounced on July 29.

Ishrat case

New Delhi (PTI): The apex court has directed IPS officer P.P. Pandey to appear before an Ahmedabad trial court on July 29 in connection with the Ishrat Jahan case. The court restrained the CBI from arresting the absconding officer.

Drug trial rap

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has said clinical trials of untested drugs on humans require certain mandatory standards to be followed. It has directed the government to put in place a mechanism to monitor such drug trials.

Indian peddlers

Bangkok, July 26 (PTI): Two Indian men were arrested in Thailand today for allegedly carrying 12kg of drugs worth Rs 8 crore.

Virdi Hardev Singh, 51, and Puran Singh, 41 were held by Thai customs officers after they arrived from Chennai via Singapore. Crystal methamphetamine, also known as “ice”, was found in their bags. The duo confessed they had visited Bangkok earlier to recce the smuggling route.

Kumbh safety

Nashik (PTI): The Nashik Municipal Corporation has decided to widen several ghats on the banks of the Godavari in view of the Kumbh Mela to be held in 2015. During the last Kumbh Mela in 2003-04, a stampede had occurred, killing 36 pilgrims.

Exam order

Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court has quashed the SSC Board’s decision to ban a student from appearing in the September/October exam this year for writing her seat number on the answer sheet instead of the question paper during her civics-history exams in March. The court was hearing 14-year-old Vani Deshpande’s plea.

Insat launch

Bangalore (PTI): Insat-3D, India’s second meteorological satellite, was launched on Friday from a spaceport in French Guiana. The Insat-3D has an improved imaging system that will provide vertical profiles of temperature, humidity and integrated ozone through the new atmospheric sounding system.

Goa beaches

Panaji (PTI): A special police division will patrol Goa’s beaches till midnight when the tourist season begins in September, state tourism minister Dilip Parulekar said.

Zoo protest

New Delhi (PTI): Peta volunteers on Friday staged a protest outside Delhi Zoo. The protest was organised after six tigers died in the zoo in the past six months.
