Mishap artery to get police station

Good news for commuters. Bad news for speedsters.

Increasing cases of rash driving and mishaps on Tata-Kandra Road have prompted the Seraikela-Kharsawan district administration to moot a traffic police station on the arterial link that was made into a four-lane last year.

Seraikela-Kharsawan SP Indrajit Mahatha said the district authorities had already forwarded the proposal to the home department and a nod would come soon.

“Trained personnel will man the police station, which will be well-stocked with gadgets for handling traffic on Tata-Kandra Road that are witnessing too many accidents. Once the thana comes up, traffic policemen will carry out regular helmet checks and impose speed limits on vehicles,” he added.

As for the location of the proposed traffic police station, the SP said they had identified 17 places. “Of them all, Beco More seems to be ideal because it is located centrally between Adityapur and Gamharia. Moreover, road mishaps are maximum here,” he added.

According to the SP, the decision to open a traffic police station on the road, which connects the twin industrial towns of Jamshedpur and Adityapur, was taken on the basis of accident figures of past two years, especially since December 31, 2012 when the four-lane was inaugurated.

Over 120 people died in mishaps in the past two years. The stretch witnessed 23 fatal accidents since December 31.

On installing traffic signal, Mahatha said they were surveying the area.
