Trailer crushes girl on father’s scooter

A 23-year-old girl, pillion-riding on her father’s scooter, died after being hit by a trailer on the busy Bhuiyandih-Agrico Road under Sitaramdera police station on Monday morning.

Shusma Kumari, a student of Graduate School College for Women who was simultaneously pursuing a skill development course at Tata Motors, was on her way to Mango-based JKS College to appear for her supplementary Part III exam when the accident occurred around 10.30am.

Shusma was rushed to Tata Main Hospital with a crushed leg around 11am. She succumbed to her injuries around 4pm.

Her father, S.B. Singh (55), a resident of Govindpur who works at Tata Motors, did not suffer any major injury and was admitted to MGM Medical College and Hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the trailer hit the two-wheeler from behind, causing Singh to fall on the left side of the road whereas his daughter landed on the right.

“As the girl fell down, the trailer, which was just behind the scooter, ran over her waist. Her left leg got severed from the thigh. The man was lucky as he escaped with minor injuries on hands and legs,” said a passer-by.

Police, however, blamed the victim’s father for riding recklessly.

According to Sitaramdera officer-in-charge Indubhushan Kumar, the trailer was moving in moderate speed. “The mishap took place as the two-wheeler rider overtook the heavy vehicle from the wrong side,” he said.

The driver of the trailer tried to flee, leaving behind the vehicle, but he was chased by a section of local residents and caught. “The driver is in our custody,” Kumar said.

The Bhuiyandih-Agrico stretch is increasingly getting mishap-prone. With heavy vehicles frequenting the route, smaller vehicles and two-wheelers have a tough time negotiating the road, which is a link to Mango.

Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Rakesh Mohan Sinha, however, said they had already taken several measures to prevent mishaps on the road and streamline traffic, but two-wheelers ought to be more careful.

“We have set up a number of speed-breakers on Bhuiyandih-Agrico Road keeping in mind the points where chances of mishaps are maximum. We will look into other ways to make the stretch accident-free,” said the DSP (traffic).
