Demo over police action

Sambalpur, April 22: The Hanuman Jayanti Co-ordination Committee today staged a dharna in front of the district collector’s office, protesting against police for registering a case against BJP MLA Jaya Narayan Mishra and two others on assault charge.

The police had accused Mishra, former Sambalpur Municipality chairman Girish Patel and working president of the committee Siba Agrawal, of assaulting a senior police official during the Hanuman Jayanti procession on April 14. The MLA had allegedly assaulted deputy superintendent of police Joshobanta Senapati during the procession following an altercation. Senapati lodged a police complaint on April 15. The committee had also lodged a case in the court of SDJM against five persons, including two police officers.

The committee demanded action against the police officials. It also submitted a memorandum to governor S.C. Jamir. In its memorandum to the governor, the committee has stated: “A few people of a particular community obstructed the Hanuman Jayanti procession. However, the police registered a case against Jaya Narayan Mishra, Girish Patel and Siba Agrawal. Though there was permission for the procession, the police did not provide security to it.”

Mishra today said: “A few BJD workers are behind the incident.”
